Biomed Research and Technologies
has developed a novel
topical formulation that helps the skin restore and rejuvenate its
protective barrier layer. The formulation consists of compounds,
termed
pro-lipids, which skin cells use to produce a variety of lipids that
create a protective infrastructure between skin cells. This protective
intracellular lipid infrastructure helps prevent moisture loss from the
skin, and also helps protect inner skin layers from external threats.
A critical function of
the skin is to protect the body from injury, environmental damage, and from
moisture loss. This protection is provided by the skin barrier that
resides in the stratum corneum. Recent research has revealed that the
barrier function of the skin is enabled by unique set of lipids produced by
the skin cells in the epidermis. These lipids surround and fill in gaps
around the skin cells in the same way that mortar surrounds and holds together
bricks in a wall, as illustrated below.

Epidermal
cells to the right of the picture are surrounded by skin lipids (shown in
blue), whereas cells to the left are devoid of lipids. Epidermal cells
without surrounding lipids are susceptible to skin injury, infection and moisture loss. A unique feature of BRT technology is that it
replenishes skin lipids. |
A healthy skin is able
to produce adequate amount of skin lipids. However, the skin’s ability to
produce these lipids diminishes with aging, lifestyles, medication and
certain skin diseases. For example, smoking, the use of certain medications
such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, and diseases such as diabetes adversely
affect the production of skin lipids. Certain skin diseases (atopic
dermatitis, ichthyosis, and eczema), are also associated with inadequate
lipid production. These decreases in lipid production have deleterious
consequences on the skin health in general and on the barrier and other
functions of the skin in particular. Because adequate lipid production is
an important component of good health, there is a need for a technology that
can enhance the production of skin’s own lipids. BRT technology
replenishes these lipids, with profound implications for skin health.
The Company seeks to license certain market
sectors of its lipid regeneration technology to
partners with
established sales and marketing presence. Opportunities to
utilize the Company’s lipid generation technology in other product formats or
application are available. Investment inquiries from strategically
aligned companies are welcome.
